ASC & GlobalG.A.P certified
Our fish are ASC and GlobalG.A.P. certified.
To farm salmon sustainable means having as little negative impact on the environment and the ecosystems in the ocean as possible. It´s all about making sustainable choices based on four critical factors: Not using chemicals, prevent escapes and protect wildlife, and to farm at a low intensity.
No chemicals
Our salmon get a feed that is nutritional and free of chemicals, antibiotics and hormones. They live in nets free from antifouling containing copper, and because of high amounts of cold fresh water in Skjerstadfjorden, we don’t need pesticides. In our special feed, we only use organic minerals to improve the salmon’s mineral uptake. In this way, the salmon gets a robust immune system and a more robust salmon is more resistant to disease. The result is a healthy and natural salmon, free of chemicals, and a clean and living fjord.
Escaping fish
Fish escaping and mixing with the wild salmon stock is one of the main issues with farming in open net pens. We are dedicated to reaching the zero vision for escapes. All of our processes and routines at the localities are designed to prevent and to avoid escapes. Even though we have a full-range set of cameras underwater, we frequently use divers to control the net pens to ensure zero escapes. Our dedication has led to zero escape incidents in the past 12 months. And for at least ten years there have been no major escape events in Skjerstadfjorden.
Production intensity
High-intensity production is a problem in the salmon industry. The seabed and ecosystems can get affected by feces and leftover feed. In Skjerstadfjorden, we are the only farmers so the total production intensity in the fjord is very low. By using advanced technology, we can ensure that we farm with the right amount of feed. We continuously monitor the fjord and the nearby rivers to make sure that the water and seabed are healthy and clean.
Rating and certifications
The globes growing population need to have access to sustainable, nutritious and clean food. We believe in smartly and humbly harvesting the resources of the sea. By controlling the whole value chain of the salmon production, we have strategically chosen facilities close to each other and utilized our natural given advantages in Northern Norway. This reduces our emissions and ensures the highest quality salmon.
Nordic Blu is certified by several independent organizations. This ensures that our salmon is produced in line with the highest standards within sustainability, animal welfare, working life, and the environment. These certifications are your guarantee for sustainable and responsibly produced salmon.
